There is one structural pattern or motif in Cage's, Silence; Lectures and Writings, that recurs with a regularity that cannot be seen as random. This is Cage's practice of following many of the essays in the collection with one or more anecdotes taken from his own life and experience. While not explicitly offering explanation or insight into the preceding essay, the anecdotes do bring the author's theories into the realm of everyday life and reality.
