Godfrey, on occasion, gives Silas money for Eppie, but he does not do a great deal for her. What holds him back from doing more for her? What does he promise himself in this regard?
Godfrey does only a limited amount to help Eppie, so as not to arouse too much suspicion as to his motives; he doesn't want anyone to find out yet that he is her father. He promises himself that he will bring it all out in the open at a later time, and he will help her more in the future.
