The authors suggest that the students begin the process of interpretation by first looking at the historical context of the object they are writing about. History of an object provides the background and historical knowledge to writers and enables them to apply their critical thinking skills to see how the present context may or may not be different from the past, which is one of the first steps in critical interpretation of facts.
