A review or opinion may include description of the program, the participants, or the characters, and give one's reasons why one likes the program or not. It may not go beyond the surface to make a critical cultural analysis. Semiotic writing involves critical interpretation of the topic that goes beyond the surface. It requires examining the underlying ideologies, worldviews and values systems and their impact on the society. Semiotic analysis does not shy away from differing with traditional thinking on a topic such as gender roles.
