What does Sarah's affair represent?

Sarah's affair represents her desire for punishment for the guilt she feels regarding the car accident. She seeks out someone who specifically will be able to punish her and treat her roughly and with cruelty because she feels like that is the only way for her to absolve herself of her guilt. Of course, this does not actually end up working; Peter eventually finds out about the affair, and it does not do anything to help her psyche.
