May is a character in the short-story, Country Love Story. She is a woman married to a man twenty years her senior. When her husband becomes ill, May attempts to do what is best for him, but she soon learns that she doesn't know him as well as she believed. After they move to the country, May quickly realizes that her husband's illness is driving him away from her, causing him to become a violent and angry man. Confused, angry, lonely, and hurt, May invents a lover to spend her time with, and when her husband recovers, May is dismayed to find that she no longer loves him.
