Christian Darling is the main character in the short-story, Eighty Yard Run. He is described as a well-built, thirty-five-year-old man, who has spent much of his life looking backwards. Once a star football player, he spent the first part of his marriage to his college sweetheart, Louise, taking her for granted and cheating on her. His life was football, and when that was over, he lived Darling lived through his job with Louise's father as a successful businessman. When the depression hit, however, Darling was left with nothing, leading him to become jealous of his wife, and angry at her individual success. Instead of being supportive, he acted selfishly, taking Louise and her kindness for granted. It was only when Darling realized she had begun to pull away from him that he attempted to make amends, but it was too late.
