Who is N.B. Forrest from Shiloh: A Novel and what is their importance?

N.B. Forrest was a cavalry commander. He is one of the commanders that believes they should withdraw from the upcoming battle, but like his counterparts, he does not believe he has the authority to make that decision. Forrest is wounded at the Battle of Fallen Timbers.
