Janine Hathaway from Shadow Kiss is Rose's estranged mother. She is also a very skilled guardian who gave up Rose to the academy when she was born so that she could continue her guardian tasks. This has always made Rose resentful where her mother is concerned, but in this novel they end up working together and come to an understanding.
