The novel is divided into many very short sections. The division between chapters does not have any always-followed rules. Instead, Babitz turns to new chapters for many different meanings. Sometimes, new chapters start because Jacaranda is doing something new. For example, she finally gets on the plane for New York in the chapter “New York, New York (The Mysterious East Lures the Innocent Virgin.”
