Goldenrod is a symbol of health in the novel. Leona’s grandmother claimed that a cup of goldenrod tea kept her healthy even without modern medicine. In honor of her grandmother, Leona planted goldenrod in the garden. She shared some of the flowers with Marcela, a pregnant teen, telling her that drinking it would make her delivery easier.
