Who is Spencer Pike from Second Glance: A Novel and what is their importance?

Spencer Pike is Cecelia's husband. He is an anthropology professor at the University of Vermont, as well as a believer in eugenics. Spencer loves his wife to distraction, and when she repeatedly attempts to kill herself, he is at a complete loss. He tries to keep his wife under constant observation, and later begins locking her in her bedroom to keep her from hurting herself.

Over time, Spencer concludes that Cecelia is having an affair with Gray Wolf, an Abenaki Indian. When her baby is born with Abenaki features, Spencer kills the baby to protect his own reputation. The next day, he finds Cecelia dead, something he will have to live with for the rest of his life.
