In the novel, money symbolizes the destructive nature of limitations of personal resources. Both Amy and Sylvie struggle with a lack of money. In Sylvie’s case, this struggle contributes to her decision to kill herself. Amy, however, manages to persevere. The novel thereby advocates for the view that one should not allow practical/materialistic matters to overwhelm one’s psyche.
