The narrator’s wife is Marwan’s mother. She accompanies her husband and Marwan to the Mediterranean Sea, and she boards the refugee boat with them. She and the narrator are aware that many people in other countries are hostile to refugees. The narrator’s wife states that, if those people could directly witness the horror of war-torn Syria, then those people would be kinder and more welcoming to refugees.
