Significance of Beach

The narrator and his family eventually arrive at a beach on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. A fairly small, motor-powered boat picks up the narrator, his family, and other refugees from the beach in an attempt to give them safe passage to Europe. The story ends as the sea journey begins, and the narrator does not know if the journey will be safe or successful.
