What does the sling that Nick wears on his arm come to represent in the novel, Scat?

The sling on his arm represents Nick not giving his all and holding back from team efforts. When he wears it, he is not useful in team environments because it hinders him. When he takes it off, he fully participates as a team member and is able to be an asset to the team.
