In Chapter 21, the author reveals the meaning of the novel’s title. The term “scat,” has two meanings in this case; one meaning, as the helicopter pilot suggests, is to leave. Thus, Twilly is telling the oil company to leave. The other meaning is poop. In this case, Twilly is referencing the panther poop he has found. He is telling anyone who sees the message that the area is a panther habitat.
