Why was salt in such high demand in Britain?

The demand for salt in England was huge because of the culinary reliance on salted fish and salted meat. The English Bacon was so heavily salted that it needed to be soaked in water before cooking. Another English staple was butter, which needed to be heavily salted otherwise it would quickly turn rancid.
