What virtually destroyed the salt industry in China in 1995?

1995 the government banned the mining of salt because of its lack of Iodine. International heath groups were worried that Iodine deficiencies lead thyroid problems. Although probably better for the health of the Chinese, this has led to the destruction of salt production in Zigong and surrounding Sichuan province.
