What influence has salt had on modern day language?

The first great road in Rome was known as the Via Salaria, or "salt road." At certain times, Roman soldiers were even paid in salt, which is the origin of the word "salary." The Romans salted their greens to eliminate their bitterness, hence the term "salad."
