How did the Americans try to combat the British blockade?

The British blockaded American ports during the war, leading to serious salt shortages. The Continental Congress encouraged salt production in the colonies by giving subsidies to the production of salt works and exempting salt workers from military service. However, whatever solution they devised, there was never enough salt to meet their needs.
