Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior is a fictionalized autobiography of a college professor and former athlete, who has received intensive spiritual training but lost his way in the effort to earn a living. When his five-year marriage falls apart, Dan Millman takes a summer off teaching to rediscover his "transcendent sense of freedom" but finds only frustration. On a layover, Dan remembers his teacher Socrates' prediction that he will one day study under a Hawaiian shaman, and he undertakes a frustrating search for her in Honolulu. He describes all of this somberly, but with touches of humor and appreciation for what bits of good he can glean from the experiences.
