Who is Luther Sawdust from Sacred Hunger and what is their importance?

Luther Sawdust is a mulatto beggar. He lives on the streets of New Orleans, where he starts up conversations with everyone he meets. He tells of his life in which his father was a surgeon on a Liverpool ship. Luther spent his childhood in a tropical paradise where whites and blacks lived in peace and harmony.
