What is ironic about the experience that teaches Anderson that some words are too powerful to be expressed aloud?

The irony lies in the fact that Anderson's mother had been trying to teach her daughter propriety when she forced a bar of soap into her mouth after a curse word had escaped Anderson's lips. Instead, Anderson's mother taught Anderson about silence in a way that would trap Anderson inside of her own pain and trauma after her rape at age 13.
