The irony lies in the fact that Anderson's mother had been trying to teach her daughter propriety when she forced a bar of soap into her mouth after a curse word had escaped Anderson's lips. Instead, Anderson's mother taught Anderson about silence in a way that would trap Anderson inside of her own pain and trauma after her rape at age 13.
