In the poem entitled “gauntlet thrown,” (78) Anderson recounts how playing sports all three seasons of her tenth grade year had helped her to manage her emotions, to focus on school, and to have the courage to attempt to form friendships. These activities are provided as evidence for the fact that Anderson was gaining strength and courage as a result of being involved in sports. This claim is underscored again when Anderson states, “I stopped/being rabbit-scared/most days” (78).
