In the poem entitled “if it please the court,” (153) Anderson describes standing in as a court reporter one day at work. The case had involved a violent rapist who lured a 19-year-old woman to his home and subjected her to binding and torture for 24 full hours. Anderson underscores the way in which the rapist’s lawyer had attacked the victim, “shouting that she drank, she danced,/she dressed to look good/she wanted it, she followed him/liked it rough” (153).
