In the first months after Anderson is raped, she protects herself by distancing herself from the memory and experience as much as possible. In her attempt to remove herself from situations in which she could be hurt, Anderson withdraws completely away from other people. This is a problem, since it makes Anderson's healing from the trauma very difficult to achieve.
