In a poem entitled “peanut butter chews,” Anderson calls up language like “shape-shifted” (88) in order to depict the way in which she had changed from an isolated marijuana user in her freshman year into a sociable and academically strong athlete. The transformation had occurred between her ninth and eleventh grade years.
