The poem entitled “separation--AWOL 1” (121) uses white space and a page break in order to create suspense in the mind of the reader. Anderson has just shared that when she returned from her foreign exchange program, her parents had started drinking alcohol much earlier in the day. At the end of the first page of the poem, Anderson states that one day she had come home to the “sound of a hammer” and as she crept to the door of her parents’ bedroom, she imagined a “bloody body” that would be “certain to be staining the floor” (121) when the door was opened. There is then a measure of white space and a page break, forcing the reader to turn the page in order to find out that Anderson’s mother had been using the hammer to bang a bed frame back into shape.
