Who is Mrs. Ellet from Ruth Hall and Other Writings and what is their importance?

Mrs. Ellet is Ruth's mother. Ruth remembers little about her mother because she died when Ruth was a young child. She does remember, however, that her mother often tried to cover up her father's rudeness with jokes.
