How does the author use foreshadowing in Ruth Hall and Other Writings?

In Chapter Fifty-Six, the author foreshadows Ruth's success when her brother turns his back on her and refuses to assist her in her time of need. Ruth's response is to tell her she will remember this day when she is a woman..... her mother's determination will not fail her.
