The novel, Running with Demons, by Terry Brooks, follows a simple structure, taking the reader over a period of five days in the town of Hopewell, Illinois. The novel covers the five days primarily chronologically, moving forward through time, but sometimes delving into the past through flashbacks focusing on Nest Freemark and John Ross, the central characters. The flashbacks are used to highlight the reasons why both Nest and John are in service to the Word, as well as describing how each of them came by or learned about their magical powers. The five days that are covered in the novel range from July 1 to July 5, covering the events leading up to the possible end of the world, which Ross foretells will happen on the Fourth of July.
