In Chapter One, Agat's choice to flee Ronin shows that the demon knows fear and is therefore not invincible. Ronin's near-suicide, meanwhile, foreshadows his suicide-ritual with Casey at the end of the novel, when he once again believes that he has failed and all is lost.
