Ms. Taylor wrote Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry during a time when balck civil rights were taking place. The Black Power movement was running at its height and there was an increasing presence of African-American history being taught in the schools. As a result, Taylor wanted the whole truth about slavery and the black experience in America to be known.
