In the beginning of the story, the "unseen hand" is the Mormon church elders, including Dyer and Tull. The "unseen hand" is the source of all Jane's problems and it is at work because Jane is seeing a Gentile man and not conforming to the Mormon ideals of how women should behave, such as marrying a Mormon man with several wives, like Tull. Jane's wealth has protected her, but now could be the reason the Mormon church wants her to marry, so that they may get some of the wealth.
