When Venters tells Bess he must return to Cottonnwoods for supplies, Bess thinks that he may never come back. Bess believes she is not worthy of Venters because she is the famed Masked Rider and Oldring's girl. But Venters is a changed man since he came to the valley. He feels that he has been touched by God and is trying to look past Bess's past to see the girl before him.
