Mrs. Larkin would like for Jane to raise Fay, but is afraid Jane will raise her a Mormon, and thus marry her to a Mormon man with many wives. This life can be difficult for women, as the men are the all-powerful leaders of the church and the women must do as they are told. Mrs. Larkin envisions something different for her daughter.
