In the race with Venters, Jerry Card demonstrates his riding skill by jumping from one horse to another while at a full run. He also knows how to hover on the saddle like a little ball, which makes him hard to shoot. Jerry, by jumping from one horse to another, is trying to save the horses and not run them to death. He cares more for the horses than he does for himself, and Venters admires that.
