Jane's relationship with Bishop Dyer is that of teacher and student. Jane believes that Bishop Dyer is directly connected to God and she remembers a time when her father sought the Bishop's advice. But, Jane knows the deeds of the man who is Bishop Dyer and she knows he is not a good man, but her faith continues to get in the way. Jane, raised Mormon, finds it difficult to look at Bishop Dyer and see him as a man with flaws. She continues to fall back into Mormon traditional ways when she addresses him.
