In King Richard III, Shakespeare uses the metaphor of poison to depict Richard as a beast, as if here were something to be excluded from the human norm. Queen Margaret unites the two metaphors when she calls him "that poisonous bunch-back'd toad" and that "bottled spider," the spider being proverbially venomous.
