The novel is divided into 30 different chapters. Each chapter is narrated by a different character. Chase’s narration begins the novel, and he has by far more chapters than any other character. This structural reality marks Chase as the most significant character in the story. All the other characters exist to contribute to his story, but the story is, at its heart, a story about Chase. However, several of the other narrators, particularly Shoshanna, Brendan, and Joel, serve the purpose of creating another side to the bully’s story, showcasing the way in which violence can emotionally affect those targeted, and their loves ones, for years to come.
