Who is First Lieutenant Mike Edwards from Red Storm Rising and what is their importance?

First Lieutenant Mike Edwards is stationed in Keflavik, Iceland. He is a meteorologist on assignment with the Air Force. When Mike discovers that the air base at Keflavik is under attack, he escapes and soon meets up with three Marines who travel with him. Edwards has a radio that he uses to make contact with officials. At first, they don't believe him, and he is ordered to get off that channel. When he finally makes them believe he has witnessed a Russian attack on the air base, the Allied officials question him to be certain of his identity. Once his identity is established, he is given the code name "Beagle" and reports to "Doghouse."
