Why does Maven want to join the Scarlet Guard?

Maven says that he wants to join the Scarlet Guard because what his father has done and what his brother will do is wrong. Also he says he wants to join because his first real friend was a Red. His name was Thomas, and Maven watched him die and was not allowed to save him.
