What is Mare's responsibility during the attack in Chapter 20, and how does she accomplish her task?

Mare's responsibility during the attack is to give the Scarlet Guard one minute of darkness. Mare concentrates and blocks out the noises around her so she can focus on keeping the lights off with her ability.
