What does Mare say about the war at the beginning of Chapter 3?

Mare says that the war has been going on for the last hundred years. In school, Mare learned that the war started over land. The Lakelands are flat and fertile, bordered by lakes full of fish. They are not like the rocky, forested hills of Norta, where the farmlands can barely feed the people. So the king declared war and so began a conflict that neither side could really win.
