The power of love is a recurring idea in the book. This story couldn't exist without love. The story shows how love can be a wonderful thing, and it also shows how it can lead to destruction. Amelia doesn't understand what love really is. She expects affection and gifts in return for sex and doesn't understand how someone can give gifts without expecting something in return. This is shown by her reaction of anger and bitterness after Harper gives the bracelet as a gift to Haley.
