Control is another theme in the book. Rodriguez is a young man who likes to be in control. One of the reasons he gives for this is that he is so afraid of failing publicly that he prefers to be the only person in charge, and if he must fail then it will happen in private. This is partly why he decides to be a one-person crew on the set of El Mariachi. The other reason is his lack of money.
