The novel is set in many different places as the plot of the novel takes the characters on a road trip from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles. The trio camp along the way, spending most of their nights in various campgrounds along their route. The trio also make numerous stops at public attractions, such as the Grand Ole Opry and the Grand Canyon.
