Harry mistakenly equates prosperity with a nice home and nice car. He is embarrassed by his apartment. He believes it to be shabby and cheap. The fact that the closet door hits the TV when he opens it irks him and is one of the things that sets him off at the beginning of the novel. The state of his apartment is a reflection of how his life is and he does not like it because it is not prosperous.
