The novel’s prose supports both the tragic elements of the overall story, as well as its more whimsical elements. The novel often engages in humor and experimentation with genre, but it also frequently addresses salient real-world issues such as corporate greed, addiction, and racism. This tonal balance has its roots in Quichotte’s character and disposition, for the novel consistently highlights both the earnest and potentially ridiculous elements of his quest/perspective. On one hand, Quichotte thinks of his quest for love in grand and idealistic terms, but it may also be viewed as being misguided and superficial. The narration itself even describes Quichotte’s love for Salma as “an unwholesome, because entirely one-sided, passion” (4). Thus, the narrative continually values earnestness and satire in both plot and tone.
